Media and propaganda have a way of manipulating our consumer culture. We feed into what the media has to say about celebrities, the latest news, and the world in which we live. We also feed into the propaganda advertisements because they influence our opinions while distorting the truth.
The Princess and the Frog was a movie made that will go down in history for the creation of an African American princess. Although it was a good movie for the youth, it was a big discussion to those who had a greater understanding. Princess Tiana didn’t start out as a princess. She came from a family who didn’t have much and she had to work in order to get what she wanted. Her best friend, who was Caucasian, came from a rich family because her father was successful. This gave off the impression that black people always have to work to get what they want, while white people always get things handed to them. The movie setting took place in New Orleans, a place where things aren’t so great and majestic. She wasn’t from royalty or didn’t live in a castle like most of the other Disney princesses.
Celebrities are always portrayed as being beautiful or handsome. This has an impact on the regular people as a whole. Girls are starting to wear make up at a younger age in order to be seen as beautiful. Teens are also going on unhealthy diets in order to lose weight because they see thin as beautiful. Teen boys are sagging their pants because that’s what they see rappers do. Then there are those celebrities like Tyra Banks, Monique, and Toccara who like to promote that you should be comfortable in your own skin or that big is beautiful. This is motivation to the people in our society.
Teachers and educators are a source of propaganda. Students spend more hours in school than they do at home. Therefore, the majority of information is being fed to students comes from school. Because they have authority, we put our trust in our educators and take the information to be true. Sometimes teachers like to share their own beliefs with their students, giving them other options. That information can be taken and we can interpret it to however we believe.
Church is also a big form of propaganda. Besides our household, our religious beliefs come from our church. There are several different types of religions with several different beliefs. Some share similar beliefs but there will always be disagreements. People always take their religion to be the “right one”, therefore causing separation among religious groups. Religious groups are always talking about one another, causing different opinions to grow about you based on your religion. Sometimes it is beyond the pastor’s control. Therefore you are judged, causing wars between religious groups like gangs.
